*Quick note about Google Classroom with Mrs. Patterson. This is a platform in which students will receive their materials for the day (which will be a mix of direct instruction and independent/partner work). Students may save a copy of the materials for later (things tend to get lost after a few days in Google Classroom). Students may also access this material at home (by putting “Google Classroom” in the search bar and logging in with their Chromebook login information). The class code for math & science is m7smbj1 (we'll be using this for both classes). I’m looking forward to using this technology in our class this year!
How do the specifics of switching teachers/classes work?
- Your main communication will come through the homeroom teacher (the other teacher will send communication through this teacher as well). This is also who you will have first quarter conferences with (unless otherwise specified). However, communication is also conducted through our websites, a monthly newsletter, and Google calendar.
- Ms. Kim will teach your child literacy, and Ms. Patterson will teach math and science. Homeroom instruction, such as morning meeting, will occur through your child’s homeroom teacher.
- Due to the fact that one class is inside, and one is outside, students will practice switching classes between these two rooms many times during the first week of school. This will also give students a chance to exercise responsibility in bringing all of their materials to class during transitions. Students have a key to access the building, and will always have a buddy when traveling in and out of the school.
How will my child’s teacher communicate about grades?
- Grades will be communicated through your child’s Friday Folder and Power School. Teachers will not usually contact you about single grades, and will instead use the folder and Power School to communicate. If grades become a problem/trend, then a conference can be scheduled to discuss that issue.
Will I get a weekly email?
- This year, I’ll be using an app called Bloomz to communicate with parents. Sign up at www.bloomz.net (Please email if you need your child's code) and make sure that you’re getting the PTO email from school as well!
- A note about Bloomz: I use this mainly to send out pictures of what we’re doing in class as well as sign ups (for conferences, field trips, materials, etc.). If you have an urgent question for me, please either email or contact the office. I don’t see Bloomz messages as frequently. Thank you!
Will assignments and quizzes be communicated to parents?
- Tests and quizzes will be communicated through the Google calendar (http://mspattersonsclass.weebly.com/math--science-google-calendar.html) and a monthly newsletter. It is important that they take responsibility for writing down their own assignments in their agenda and keeping track of due dates. These dates will also be posted in class to help students remember.
How will students’ work be graded?
- All students’ work will be graded using either a point system or a rubric. On a test, the points deducted will be noted in the bottom corner of each page or on the problem. If there is a rubric on an assignment, the rubric will be included either in the assignment or sent home to parents.
- The new CMS grading scale is as follows: A 100-90, B 89-80, C 79-70, D 69-60, F Below 59
How will my child complete work they missed when they were absent?
- Your child is expected to ask about the work they missed when they return to school, and to check Google Classroom for Mrs. Patterson. They will receive verbal instructions from me on how to complete the work, and can come to me with any questions they have upon completing the work. As a general rule, they will be responsible for turning in any missed work five days after the missed day.
When can I expect grades to appear in Power School?
- Grades will be put in to Power School as quickly as possible. At the latest, grades will be entered a week after the due date for any given assignment. Please keep in mind that if a student turns in an assignment late, I will have to grade that assignment later as well. Any delays in posting grades will be due to scheduling and an increase in workload, so please know that I will be getting grades posted as soon as my schedule allows!
How do I contact you?
- The most reliable way to contact us is by email at [email protected] and [email protected] and we will do our best to respond from 7:15 am to 4:00 pm on weekdays. However, we will not be available during instructional time or outside of these specified hours.
- The office number is (980) 343-1071, and they can connect you to our classroom phones.
- If you would like to schedule a time to meet, please email us and we can talk about whatever concerns or questions you have.
What will my child have for homework and how will it be graded?
- Math & Science: There is no designated math and science homework this year. If your child has unfinished work, this can be completed as homework. Please check my website for additional resources should you like your child to practice skills learned in class at home.
- Literacy: Students will read nightly.
